Expert meeting on adolescents and youth in emergencies and transitions for UNICEF, New York

David was invited to attend a 3-day expert meeting in New York, where youth experts and a wide range of UN agencies gathered to discuss the complexities of programming youth into the work done by UN agencies during emergency and transitional situations. For example, when an emergency occurs, young people have their lives uprooted just as much as do adults – their schooling is halted, exams are not written, skills not learned, social lives disrupted, relationships damaged – and yet youth remain silent citizens in all of this. Women, children, the elderly, adult men – of course – and many others have specific interventions. But not adolescents and youth, and this was what the workshop addressed. More importantly, perhaps, it reflects a growing international moral consensus around the needs of youth – something David has long written about and argued for, and which will be key in generating sufficient critical mass – in South Africa and elsewhere – for youth development to be taken seriously by governments.
