Survey of Gauteng ANC members and in-depth interviews with leaders of the tripartite alliance

Strategy & Tactics has undertaken polling research for the ANC since we were formed almost a decade ago, and in late 2006 we were asked to survey paid-up members of the ANC in Gauteng – in essence, the activist core of the movement. The methodology was complex, requiring us to attend specified ANC branch meetings stratified by region, identify paid-up members and interview them, as well as identifying branch office bearers and interviewing them, trying to ensure gender parity in the latter sample. At the same time, Nobi was interviewing leadership figures from different Alliance structures in the province – the ANC itself, the ANC Youth league and omen’s League, COSATU, the SA Communist Party, Young Communist League and others. Nobi also attended a number of branch meetings in different parts of Gauteng to watch meetings and through participant observation to identify and record the dynamics at play, the issues coming to the fore, and so on. The fascinating data that emerged have been made public by the ANC, and can be requested from Mduduzi
